Anchuruli Thuruthu Island

Anchuruli Thuruthu Island is a small island nestled in the middle of the Idukki reservoir in Kerala. Not only is it a scenic spot for taking in the panoramic views of the surrounding hills and water, but it also serves as a gateway to explore the intriguing Anchuruli tunnel, a 5.5 km long circular tunnel that transports water from Erattayar dam to Idukki arch dam. Anchuruli Thuruthu Island is surrounded by dense forest and offers a mesmerizing view of the Idukki reservoir and the Idukki dam.

Anchuruli Thuruthu Island is a nature lover’s paradise, a photographer’s haven, and an adventurer’s dream. It is a place where you can unwind, relax, and revel in the splendor of nature. However, you must also exercise responsibility and respect for the environment by avoiding littering or causing damage. There are many things to do at Anchuruli Thuruthu Island such as enjoying the mesmerizing view of the Idukki reservoir, trekking, and camping. Some nearby attractions include Ayyappankovil Hanging Bridge, Idukki Dam, and Kalvari Mount View Point.

The best time to visit Anchuruli Thuruthu Island is during the winter or summer season when the water level is low and the island is more visible. However, during monsoon season, the water level rises, engulfing most of the island, and rendering it inaccessible. During heavy rains, the water gushing out of the tunnel creates a spectacular sight. It is important to note that swimming or entering the water is strictly forbidden due to the high level of mud and steepness, which has resulted in numerous fatalities.

The island is located near Kanchiyar village, about 9 kilometers away from Kattappana town and 12 kilometers away from Ayyappancoil. To reach Anchuruli Thuruthu Island, start by heading to Kanchiyar town and taking a right onto Forest Station road. Follow this road for 5 kilometers until you reach a point where vehicles can no longer continue. From there, it’s a 2-kilometer trek through the dense forest to reach the island. The nearest airport is Cochin international airport and the closest major railway station is Ernakulam Junction.
