Parassinikadavu Sree Muthappan Temple, also known as Parassini Madappura Sree Muthappan Temple, is located in the Kannur district of Kerala, on the banks of the Valapattanam River. It is one of the most sacred pilgrim sites in north Kerala and is dedicated to the worship of Sree Muthappan, a Hindu deity worshipped commonly in the Kannur region.

A Temple of Unity, Rituals, and Divine Performances

The temple is unique in that it attracts people from all sections of society, irrespective of religion or caste. Dogs are also considered sacred here as they are believed to be the vehicle of the deity. According to local tradition, Sree Muthappan is a combination of two Hindu deities, Thiruvappana (Lord Vishnu) and Vellattom (Lord Shiva). The worship of Muthappan is one of a kind, with the Satvik (pure) and Tantrik (magical) forms of worship coexisting peacefully. The ritualistic Theyyam enactment of the deity is presented in two versions, Thiruvappan and Vellattam.

Sree Muthappan is the main deity of the temple and is worshipped in two different forms – Thiruvappan and Vellattam – which are represented through a ceremonial performance known as Theyyam. The temple is managed by the Parassini Madappura Sree Muthappan Trust and is located about 18 kilometers from Kannur city and 10 kilometers from Taliparamba.
