Sakthan Thampuran Palace, also known as Vadakkekara Palace, is a historic monument in the heart of Thrissur, Kerala. Built in 1795 by King Rama Varma Sakthan Thampuran, the ruler credited with ushering in the golden era of the Kochi dynasty, this palace is a blend of Dutch and traditional Kerala architecture. Today, it stands not only as a reminder of regal grandeur but also as a museum that showcases Kerala’s rich cultural past.

A Glimpse into History and Architecture

The two-storeyed palace follows the traditional Nālukettu style with high ceilings, thick walls, and polished Italian marble floors that ensure a pleasant interior in all seasons. The palace was converted into a museum in 2005 and is maintained by the Department of Archaeology. Its galleries include exhibits on bronze artifacts, ancient coins, household utensils, sculptures, and inscriptions, offering visitors a chance to explore Kerala’s history up close.

The complex also houses the tombs of Sakthan Thampuran himself, a Zamorin of Calicut, and a ruler of Kochi. Adding to its charm are the heritage gardens, a sacred serpent grove (Sarpakavu), a butterfly garden, and a pond, creating a serene green space around the palace.

Visitor Information

Sakthan Thampuran Palace is open to visitors from 9:30 AM to 1:00 PM and 2:00 PM to 4:30 PM, and remains closed on Mondays.
