As the district’s longest-hanging suspension bridge, it is a notable attraction for visitors. Ayyappancoil itself is a peaceful destination, perfect for families, friends, or solo travelers seeking unspoiled natural surroundings.
Historic Sastha Temple and the Vibrant Village of Ayyappancoil
Ayyappancoil, a village in Idukki district, is also known for its historic Sastha Temple, which sits on the riverbanks. This temple, believed to have been consecrated by sage Parashurama, is often submerged during the Southwest monsoon but remains a significant landmark. The village’s economy relies mainly on agriculture, with crops like cardamom, pepper, and tea being cultivated.
Administered by the Ayyappancoil Panchayath since 1977, the village consists of 13 wards for administrative purposes. The suspension bridge, spanning 200 meters across the Periyar River, provides year-round pedestrian access and draws tourists with its scenic views.
Tranquil Escapes and Nearby Attractions
The monsoon is often recommended for the most vibrant views. Some concerns about the bridge’s maintenance and safety have been noted, but the spot remains popular for its serene environment, making it ideal for a short visit, relaxation, and photography.
While the area lacks extensive amenities and infrastructure, it offers a tranquil escape with picturesque landscapes and cultural significance. Accessible by road, the bridge also has ample parking space, enhancing its appeal as a potential tourist destination.
