Perched at 1,372 meters above sea level in the serene village of Pottenplave near Kudiyanmala, Paithalmala (also known as Pythal Mala) is the highest peak in Kannur district and a breathtaking hill station in North Kerala. Set amidst the lush greenery of the Western Ghats and bordering the Kodagu forests of Karnataka, this hidden gem has become a favored destination for trekkers, nature photographers, and travelers seeking quietude.
Exploring Paithalmala
A trek through Paithalmala is nothing short of a nature lover’s dream. The 6-kilometer trail winds through dense semi-evergreen forests, rare native flora, streams, and occasional waterfalls, culminating at a panoramic viewpoint near the Observatory Tower. From here, visitors are treated to expansive views of both Kerala and Karnataka’s hillscapes. The trek typically takes 2 to 3 hours at a relaxed pace, and en route, explorers might encounter exotic butterflies and the occasional signs of wildlife.
There are two main entry points: one from Kappimala for more seasoned hikers and another from Pottenplave near Kudiyanmala, offering a relatively moderate climb. As you near the summit, mist-covered meadows and the ruins of the Vaithalkon King’s palace evoke a sense of timeless solitude. Paithalmala is best visited during the monsoon or early summer months, when the rolling hills are cloaked in green and the air is cool and refreshing. The area also lies close to attractions like Ezharakund Waterfalls, Palakkayam Thattu, Kottiyoor Temple, and local wildlife sanctuaries, making it perfect for extended exploration.
Visitor Information
Located in Kannur’s hilly interior, Paithalmala is about 65 kilometers from Kannur city and can be accessed via Taliparamba and Kudiyanmala. Public transport, including buses, is available up to the base area. Entry requires a fee of INR 30 per person, and visitors are advised to bring enough water, wear leech-protective clothing (especially during monsoon), and avoid littering as the region is a designated plastic-free zone.
Facilities include eco-lodges and resorts near the base offering comfortable stays and local cuisine. Mobile network is limited, primarily accessible via BSNL, adding to the area’s unplugged charm. While the trail is generally safe and suitable for all fitness levels, caution is advised near steep valley edges—locally known as “suicide points.” There are no strict time limits, but descending before dusk is highly recommended.
