Nestled along River Road in Fort Kochi, Bastion Bungalow is a heritage building that reflects the architectural legacy of the Dutch colonial era. Constructed in 1667, it was named after the Stromberg Bastion—once part of the old Dutch fortifications that once dominated the area. Overlooking the sea, this historic bungalow showcases a fusion of European and indigenous styles, offering a window into Fort Kochi’s colonial past. Though it now serves as the official residence of the Sub-Collector, the building has managed to retain much of its historic charm, making it a notable stop for visitors interested in Kochi’s colonial story.
Bastion Bungalow: A Glimpse into History and Architecture
Built on a former military outpost, Bastion Bungalow was originally intended as a residence for colonial officials. In the early 19th century, British Resident Colonel Macaulay lived here, during a time when the British were gradually erasing Dutch military influence in the region. Remarkably, while many parts of the old fort were demolished in 1806, the bungalow itself survived the transitions between colonial powers. Its large arched windows, sloped tiled roof, and airy interiors continue to reflect the Dutch design sensibility combined with adaptations suited to the tropical climate.
Today, the bungalow is more than just a relic—it plays an active role in Kochi’s modern cultural scene. It frequently serves as a venue for the Kochi-Muziris Biennale, one of India’s most celebrated contemporary art festivals. Inside, a small museum showcases paintings, period artifacts, and two preserved colonial-era cannons, offering visitors a deeper understanding of the region’s complex past.
