Tucked away in Chendamangalam, in the Ernakulam district of Kerala, lies the magnificent Paliam Palace, a 450-year-old mansion that showcases a unique blend of Kerala and Dutch architectural styles. Once the residence of the powerful Paliath Achans, the Prime Ministers to the Kings of Cochin, this palace has a rich history waiting to be uncovered.

Unveiling the Rich History of Paliam Palace

The Paliath Achans, also known as the Karanavar (Head of the Family) of the Paliam Noble Family, held significant positions as Prime Minister and Chief of Army of the kingdom of Kochi during the 17th and 18th centuries. They defended Kochi against various domestic and foreign threats, including the Portuguese, Dutch, and English. The Dutch renovated the palace, also known as ‘Kovilakam’, as a token of appreciation for the Paliath Achan’s services.

Architectural Significance and a Museum of History

The two-story building is a testament to efficient functional design, reflecting Dutch influence in its architecture. Elaborately carved wooden staircases and balustrades, thick walls with splayed openings, and a clever circulation space that facilitates air movement, making the interior cooler, are just a few of its notable features. Visitors can explore the Durbar Hall, where the Paliath Achan received his subjects and officials, and the Prasanga Peedum, from where he addressed the people of Chendamangalam.

Today, the palace is maintained as a museum, offering guided tours that glimpse its rich history and architectural significance. The museum chronicles the historical records, letters of the family, and important events that took place within its walls. The Paliam Palace, integral to the Muziris Conservation Project, offers a glimpse into the region’s rich heritage and history.

Paliam Palace is a must-visit for anyone interested in history, architecture, and culture. With its intricate wooden carvings, thick walls, and splayed openings, this palace is a testament to the region’s rich heritage. Come and discover the stories of the Paliathachans and the kingdom of Kochi, and experience the legacy of this magnificent palace.
