Thangalpara, a hilltop destination located at Kolahalamedu in Vagamon, boasts breathtaking views of the valleys and hills around it and holds a significant place in the hearts of Muslims as it houses the tomb of Sheikh Fariduddin, a Sufi saint who resided here approximately 800 years ago.
Thangalpara: Legend and Spirituality
At an altitude of 2500 meters above sea level, Thangalpara is located about 7 km from the Vagamon bus stand and is accessible by jeep or trekking through the verdant foliage. The spherical rock formation atop the hill is the main attraction of the place. Legend has it that Sheikh Fariduddin used this rock to grind pan, and it grew in size after his death. Devotees believe it to be a miracle, and many visit to pay their respects and seek blessings. The tomb of Sheikh Fariduddin lies adjacent to the rock, and a small prayer center for pilgrims can be found here.

Apart from being a pilgrimage site, Thangalpara is also known for its natural beauty and adventure activities. The panoramic views of Vagamon town and its environs can be enjoyed from the hilltop, and an ancient cave nearby can be explored, which is believed to have been used by the saint for meditation and prayer. Thangalpara is a year-round destination, but the ideal time to visit is between October and March when the weather is pleasant. There are no set visiting hours, and no entry fee is charged to visit the place. However, a small fee is levied for parking vehicles.
Getting to Thangalpara in Vagamon is convenient as it is well-connected by road from Kottayam or Cochin, with the nearest railway station being Pala (37 km) and the nearest airport being Cochin International Airport (100 km). Visitors can reach the top of the hill by either trekking for about 30 minutes or driving. Although the trek is long, it is not too difficult, and the spectacular view from the top makes it a rewarding experience.
