Located in the coastal suburb of Shankhumugham in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, Valiathura Sea Port is one of India’s oldest and most historically significant ports. Once a major hub for maritime trade, especially before the rise of Cochin Port, Valiathura played a crucial role in Kerala’s trading history.

Originally known as Raithura during the era of the Travancore Kingdom, it served as an active port since ancient times, with legends linking it to King Solomon’s spice trade. Today, though the bustling trade has faded, Valiathura remains a beloved spot, best known for its iconic 703-foot-long pier that stands as a nostalgic symbol of its glorious past.

Attractions and Highlights of Valiathura Sea Port

Valiathura’s historic significance is deeply rooted in its past as one of the most prominent ports of South Kerala. It once handled up to 50 cargo ships at a time, exporting spices and other goods, making it a vital link in ancient maritime trade routes. The port’s story echoes the glory days when Kerala’s spices were in high demand across the world.

The iconic Valiathura Pier, built over 60 years ago, stretches 214 meters into the Arabian Sea. Supported by 127 concrete piles, it once had massive cranes to unload cargo from ships anchored offshore. Although entry onto the pier is currently restricted due to its deteriorated condition, it still stands as a remarkable piece of engineering, offering a glimpse into the region’s rich port history.

Today, Valiathura thrives as a vibrant fishing port. Particularly during the monsoon season, visitors can witness a captivating scene where fishermen skillfully launch their catamarans from the pier, diving into the choppy waters with a timeless grace that speaks to their deep connection with the sea.

The surrounding landscape, adorned with swaying coconut palms and golden beaches, makes Valiathura an excellent spot for a peaceful stroll or simply relaxing by the shore. The serene charm of this hidden beach provides a perfect retreat from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Adding to Valiathura’s charm is the historic St. Antony’s Forane Church, established in 1530. This centuries-old church reflects the strong Christian heritage of the area and remains a vital part of the local community’s spiritual and cultural life.
