Pothundi Dam

Pothundi Dam is one of the oldest dams in India which was constructed in the 14th century. This irrigation dam is situated in the Palakkad district of Kerala. It is an impressive masterpiece of engineering with a core wall made of quicklime and jaggery.

The dam is constructed across the Padipuzha River and the Meenichiladipuzha River and forms a reservoir that covers an area of 30 kilometers. The stunning view of the serene landscape of the dam with hills in the reservoir’s backdrop is a fantastic sight.  There is a beautiful and well-maintained park open for visitors which is adjacent to the dam and is just perfect for kids and families to spend their weekends.

The dam is located along the road to the Nelliyampathy Hills. Visitors are greeted by a well-maintained dam garden with beautifully landscaped grounds at the entrance. The garden offers a variety of rides and is surrounded by neatly trimmed trees and plants, making it a perfect place for both children and adults to have fun. A walk through the garden leads to the base of the dam. While the climb to the top may seem challenging, the breathtaking view of the Nelliyampathy Hills from the top makes the effort well worth it. Strolling along the crest provides a panoramic view of the hills and green paddy fields on one side and the shimmering reservoir on the other.

Pothundi Dam is open for visitors from 10 AM to 5 PM all days of the week, the best time to visit Pothundi Dam is from October to February. The entry fee for Pothundi Dam for adults is INR 20 and for kids, INR 10. Pothundi Dam is just 8 kilometers away from Nenmara town and 48 kilometers from Palakkad town. The distance from the Pothundi Dam to the Nelliayampathy hills is just 17 kilometers. Palakkad Junction is the nearest railway station located at a distance of 40 kilometers and the closest airport is Cochin International Airport which is located 98 kilometers away from Pothundi Dam.
