Vaidyaratnam P S Varier’s Diverse Education and Contributions
Vaidyaratnam P. S. Varier began his educational journey at age four with basic Sanskrit. His studies expanded to grammar, Tarka Sastra, astrology, and poetics. By fifteen, he was formally studying Ayurveda principles, followed by advanced training two years later. He also spent three years learning modern medicine and trained in classical music.
At 21, Varier started his career as a physician, practicing for twelve years. His passion for Ayurveda led him to establish Arya Vaidya Sala (AVS) in 1902, modernizing Ayurvedic medicine preparation. He introduced scientific methods to preserve Kashayams, ensuring their quality.
Varier excelled in Panchakarma and Kerala Purvakarma therapies and founded a hospital providing free treatments. To promote Ayurveda, he founded Aryavaidya Pathashala, teaching Anatomy, Physiology, and Naditantra.
In the literary field, Varier edited the first Malayalam Ayurveda journal, “Dhanwantari,” and wrote books, poetry, and musical plays. He was awarded the “Vaidyaratnam” citation in 1933. Varier introduced employee bonuses and founded PSV Natyasangham for Kathakali performances. He played a key role in fostering social harmony during the Malabar rebellion and established various institutions under AVS over his 42-year tenure.
