Towering near Alappuzha Beach, the Alappuzha Lighthouse stands as one of the oldest beacons along India’s southwest coastline. First lit in 1862, this iconic red-and-white striped tower continues to draw visitors with its heritage, panoramic views, and coastal charm. Once a vital guide for ships entering the busy port town of Alappuzha, it now stands as a symbol of Kerala’s maritime past.
A Walk Through History and Scenic Heights
The lighthouse was constructed during the rule of Marthanda Varma II Maharaja of Travancore, and completed under Rama Varma Maharaja. Its foundation stone was laid by Mrs. Mough Crawford on April 26, 1860, and the tower was built with a teakwood spiral staircase rising to a height of 27 meters (92 feet). Initially equipped with optical equipment from Chance Brothers of England, the beacon was later electrified in 1960 and has since been modernized to keep pace with evolving navigation systems.
With its striking red-and-white stripes, the tower is not just a historic structure but also a popular photography spot. Climbing to the top rewards visitors with sweeping views of Alappuzha Beach, the Arabian Sea, the surrounding town, and even glimpses of the Vembanad Lake—India’s longest lake, located just 5 km away. The lighthouse features a small museum that highlights its history and the region’s rich maritime heritage.
