Anakulam Stream, at Mankulam in the Idukki district of Kerala, is a fascinating spot where elephants regularly come to drink the mineral-rich waters of the Nallathanniyar River. This unique behavior has become a popular attraction for tourists and wildlife enthusiasts.

Discover the Diverse Attractions and Wildlife of Anakulam

Anakulam, meaning “pond of elephants,” is not only about elephants. The area offers views of tea plantations, step cultivation, local village life, and nearby attractions such as the Viripara viewpoint, waterfalls, and historical caves. This serene forest village near Munnar is teeming with wildlife, including gaur, wild boar, peacocks, and deer. The rivers Idacholayaar and Nallatanniyaar nourish the landscape, providing scenic waterfalls and streams.

Travelers can reach Anakkulam via jeep services due to the forested terrain. Once there, they can enjoy local delicacies like tapioca with fish curry and buy high-quality honey at affordable prices. The best time to observe the elephants is during the dry season, usually in the evenings around 5-7 PM, when herds, including calves and tuskers, gather at the river. Visitors should be cautious and avoid interfering with the elephants’ paths, known locally as ‘Anathara.’

Getting to Anakulam and Nearby Attractions

Located 8 kilometers from Mankulam town, is about 40 kilometers from Munnar, and accessible from Kallar on the Adimali-Munnar route. This quiet village offers a peaceful retreat from city life and captivates travelers with its natural beauty and wildlife. The elephants’ visits to the Nallathanniyar River, especially during the dry season, are a highlight. The best place to observe these majestic creatures up close without any fees, Anakulam requires patience, as sightings are most common after 6 PM.

Nearby attractions include a bamboo park, Viripara Waterfalls, and Tiger Cave. The road to Anakulam, though narrow, is in good condition, making the journey from Munnar relatively easy. Limited parking is available along the roadside, and it’s advisable to avoid risky shortcuts and stick to the main roads for safety.
