Andaloor Kavu is a well-known and popular temple in Andalur, Kannur district, North Kerala, in Dharmadam village. This old temple is known as Andaloor Daivathar, and the main festival is held in mid-February, during the first week of the Malayalam calendar month “Kumbam.”
Andaloor Kavu Thira (also Theyyam or Theyaattam) is the main rite of worship in Andalur, which is a part of North Malabar. It is one of the few locations where the great epic Ramayana’s Yuddha Kanda is visualized and performed. Rama, Lakshmana, and Hanuman are the primary deities. This Kavu is important because it contains two sacred sites: Mele Kavu (upper temple) and Thazhe Kavu (lower temple) (lower temple).
The annual festival is a beautiful representation of devotional unity in a place where people still practice very old and sacred rituals all year. It is a festival that depicts great culture blending ordinary and everyday life with ancient mythologies. The festival starts in the second week of February and lasts for seven days. During the festival, over ten Theyyams are performed.
