Biodiversity and Beauty of Athirappilly Waterfalls
Athirappilly Waterfalls is a magnificent drop of foamy waters falling from the Anamudi mountains of the Western Ghats, flowing toward the Arabian Sea through the greenery of the Vazhachal Forest. Athirappilly Falls is the largest waterfall in Kerala, 80 ft high, and 330 ft long marvel. It is also known as Niagara Falls of India.
The region’s forest wildlife includes the Asian elephant, tigers, leopard, bison, sambar, and lion-tailed macaque. The rare riparian forest of 180 meters (590 ft) in the Athirappilly-Vazhachal region is the only place where all four South Indian hornbill species — the great hornbill (Kerala’s state bird), Malabar pied hornbill, Malabar greyish hornbill, and the Indian greyish hornbill are known to live together.
You’re greeted with the sight of beautiful green Sholayar Peaks peering over the flowing gush of the waterfall. Standing against the background of a rustling jungle forest, it captures so many movies and music videos here, for example, the movie Bahubali.
This location can not be overlooked by bird lovers, for it is the only location in the Western Ghats where four endangered species of Hornbill are seen. There is a swimming pool just above Athirappilly Waterfalls where you can pass the time and relax. To get a sight of the waterfall, you have to get about 100 meters down the mountain.
Exploring the Mesmerizing View
Two viewpoints offer stunning views of the Athirappilly Waterfalls: one located at the top and the other at the bottom. The top viewpoint is a short walk from the parking area and provides a panoramic view of the falls and the river valley. Additionally, other smaller waterfalls such as Charpa Waterfalls and Vazhachal Falls can also be observed from this viewpoint.
To reach the bottom viewpoint, you have to climb down about 400 steps through a forest path. This can be a bit challenging for some people, but it is worth it for the close-up view of the falls and the chance to feel the spray of water on your face. You can also take a dip in the pool at the base of the falls, but be careful of the strong currents and slippery rocks.
The Athirappilly Waterfalls is a must-see destination for anyone visiting Kerala. They offer a unique combination of natural beauty, cultural significance, and ecological importance. They are also easily accessible by road from Kochi and other nearby towns. You can spend a few hours or a whole day at the falls, depending on your preference and schedule. You can also stay at one of the many resorts or homestays near the falls, where you can enjoy a comfortable stay and a serene atmosphere.
