In the heart of Kumarakom, Kerala, lies the Bay Island Driftwood Museum, a one-of-a-kind collection featuring superior quality driftwood sculptures. Founded by Mrs. Raji Punnoose, a retired school teacher, this unique museum showcases root sculptures shaped by the Andaman Sea’s minor tsunamis. What started as a hobby soon transformed into a remarkable museum, driven by Mrs. Punnoose’s passion for driftwood art.

Bay Island Driftwood Museum: A Global Record-Holder in Artistry

Situated in the picturesque village of Kumarakom, the Bay Island Driftwood Museum stands as the only one of its kind in India, displaying various root sculptures with diverse shapes and designs. The idea to start a museum originated from an artist’s suggestion, and today, it has earned world records, the Limca Book of Records, URF Word Records, and the India Book of Records recognition.

Mrs. Raji Punnoose, the curator and proprietress, has passionately collected and exhibited over 140 driftwood sculptures, contributing significantly to Indian tourism. The museum has gained global recognition, with scholars and artists from the USA praising its unique collection. Notably, it has been featured in publications like Lonely Planet and Rough Guides.

Unveiling Nature’s Artistry at the Bay Island Driftwood Museum

Tourists visiting the museum are treated to world-class driftwood sculptures, each piece reflecting the artistry of nature, collected from the shores of the Andaman Sea and the Bay of Bengal. The museum has received prestigious awards, including the Most Innovative Tourism Project in Kerala, acknowledging its valuable contribution to the tourism industry.

The Bay Island Driftwood Museum’s exterior may seem simple at first glance, but it unfolds as a treasure trove upon closer inspection. Unlike other museums, it provides a unique hands-on experience, allowing visitors to touch and feel the exhibits. Mrs. Raji Punnose’s perceptive artistry brings artifacts collected from the Andaman Nicobar Islands to life, showcasing a lifetime of passion for collecting unique items.

Visitors leave with a new perspective on art and nature, acknowledging Mrs. Raji’s vivid imagination and passion. Managed by Mrs. Raji and her husband Mr. Punnoose Cherian, the Kumarakom driftwood museum is not just an art gallery but a passionate guide to imaginative stories about natural creations. It stands as a must-visit destination, offering an unforgettable experience and a deep appreciation for the artistry of nature.
