Bona Falls (Bonacaud Waterfalls) is a stunning cascade located in the Bonacaud region of the Thiruvananthapuram district of Kerala. It is a 3-tier waterfall that falls from an altitude of 200 meters, forming a large pool where people can swim and take a bath The waterfall is surrounded by abundant fauna, making it a perfect destination for nature enthusiasts and birdwatchers.
To visit Bona Falls, one must obtain special permission from the Forest Department. Vehicles are not allowed in the area, so visitors must park their vehicles around 2 km away from the checkpoint and walk 4 km to reach the waterfall. Bona Falls is a preferred destination for film shooting and also a nearby trekking destination called Pandipathu, where one can see gaur and other wild animals in proximity. However, only 100 people with full physical fitness are allowed to enter the forest daily after thorough verification. Women and children are discouraged from entering the forest and taking part in trekking.
Bona Falls is open from 6 AM to 6 PM all days of the week but the best time to visit the falls is from October to March when the weather is pleasant and dry. If you would like to explore more wildlife, a trek between March and June can also be considered if you are ready to adjust to the hot and humid weather. However, a visit to the falls just after the monsoon would be the ideal time to explore the falls and the valleys enveloped in lush greenery.
