Perched on a scenic peninsula in Dona Paula, about 9 kilometers from Panaji, Cabo Raj Niwas—better known as Raj Bhavan—serves as the official residence of the Governor of Goa. Overlooking the vast Arabian Sea, this historic site carries centuries of fascinating history, dating back to Portuguese rule.
Cabo Raj Niwas: A Walk Through History
Built by the Portuguese in 1540, the fort originally guarded the entrance to Goa’s harbor. In the 1650s, it became a residence for the archbishop before briefly coming under British control during the Napoleonic Wars from 1798 to 1813. Today, visitors can still spot the remnants of an old military cemetery from that period, a quiet reminder of its past.
A Blend of Culture and Architecture
Raj Bhavan is home to the charming chapel of Our Lady of The Cape (Nossa Senhora do Cabo), which dates back to 1541. This chapel, once a beacon for sailors, remains an important religious site and hosts a feast on August 15th, drawing both locals and visitors. The mansion itself beautifully reflects Portuguese and Goan architectural influences, with elegant structures and carefully preserved interiors that transport guests to a different era.
Visiting Raj Bhavan
Though it remains a functioning government residence, guided tours allow visitors to explore its rich heritage. These tours include the well-kept gardens, the historic chapel, and grand rooms filled with antique furnishings. Due to security measures, photography is restricted in some areas, and reservations are required for entry. For up-to-date details on tour schedules and bookings, checking the official Raj Bhavan website is recommended.
