Chandragiri Fort is a 17th-century fort located in the Kasaragod District of Kerala, South India. This big squarish fort is 150 feet (46 meters) above sea level and covers about seven acres along the Payaswini River. The Chandragiri Fort, founded in the 17th century by Shivappa Nayak of Bedanoor, is part of a chain of forts built by the same ruler. Bekal is 10 kilometers away from the fort.
The Chandragiri Fort in Kasaragod is located at the confluence of the Payaswini River and the Arabian Sea and is steeped in history. The ruins are perched atop a hill. People flock to Chandragiri to watch the sunset from the ancient Kizhur Siva Temple. Although the nearby Bekal Fort is a popular tourist destination, visitors to this more tranquil location will be rewarded with a panoramic view of the lush landscape.
This is how the fort’s eventful past goes: Previously, the river Chandragiri was thought to be the boundary between two important kingdoms: Kolathunadu and Thulunadu. When the Vijayanagara Empire conquered Thulunadu, the Kolathunadu kings lost control of the Chandragiri region. The Keladi Nayakas of Ikkeri was in charge of administration during the fall of the Vijayanagara Empire. The Vijayanagara Empire fell apart in the 16th century, and Vengappa Nayaka proclaimed independence. Shivappa Nayak eventually took over the reins. He constructed a chain of forts, including Chandragiri. The Chandragiri River and the Arabian Sea can be seen from this huge fort, which is 150 feet above sea level.
