Nestled in Chottanikkara, a charming suburb of Kochi, Kerala, the Chottanikkara Bhagavathy Temple is a revered sanctuary dedicated to the Hindu mother goddess Bhagavati Lakshmi, also known as Chottanikkara Amma. The main deity is venerated as Lakshmi Narayana and holds prominence for its association with exorcism rituals.

Chottanikkara Bhagavathy Temple: Legends, Divine Rituals, and Mystical Aura

The Chottanikkara Bhagavathy Temple stands as a timeless testament to mythology, deeply revered by generations. Legends entwine the temple with the worship by Bhogacharya and revered personalities like Adisankaracharya. The Swayambhoo deity, Rudraksha Sila, embellished in gold and adorned with flowers, beckons devotees from across the globe.

Nestled in a hilly region, the temple not only offers spiritual solace but also treats visitors to picturesque surroundings of green turf and golden farms. Devotees seek relief from afflictions through reverential offerings, with the temple doors opening at 4:00 a.m. The morning prayers are accompanied by ritualistic rhythms, enhancing the divine experience, especially with the presence of Sree Mookambika Saraswathy.

The Kizhukkavu Temple, situated east of the main temple, witnesses the Valiya Guruthy pooja every night at 8:45 p.m. This awe-inspiring ceremony, performed by the chief priest involving 12 cauldrons, holds a special significance. Notably, witnessing Valiya Guruthy on Fridays is believed to offer a permanent cure for women with mental abnormalities.

Adding to the temple’s mystical atmosphere is an ancient ‘Pala’ tree near the sanctum, adorned with iron nails by those seeking solace from haunted experiences. This adds an intriguing touch to the spiritual ambiance of the Chottanikkara Bhagavathy Temple, making it a place of profound devotion and mystical allure.

Worship Practices at Chottanikkara Bhagavathy Temple

The worship practices at the Chottanikkara Temple include the presiding deity being worshipped as Mahasaraswati, Mahalakshmi, and Mahakali. The temple is renowned for its ability to cure mental illnesses and disorders, a significance highlighted during the Makam Thozhal festival, featuring ritualistic baths, processions, and special darshan.

Throughout the year, various festivals such as Thiruvonam, Navarathri, Vishu, and Kumbham are celebrated with fervor. Tuesdays and Fridays hold particular importance as worship days for Bhagavathy temples. Chottanikkara Temple offers a sacred space for spiritual reflection and connection with the divine. With its rich history, captivating legends, and vibrant festivals, the temple stands as a cultural and spiritual beacon in the heart of Kerala.
