Established in 1873, this church is renowned for its striking Neo-Gothic architecture, a rare style among Goan churches. Its illuminated spires and cross-topped features make it an iconic landmark, especially when lit up in the evenings, creating a mesmerizing sight against the backdrop of lush greenery.
History and Significance of the Church of Mae De Deus
The foundation stone of the church was laid on February 7, 1867, and it was inaugurated on November 26, 1873. One of its most revered artifacts is the gold-painted wooden statue of Mae De Deus (Mother of God), which was rescued from the ruins of the convent of Mae de Deus at Old Goa. This 400-year-old statue adds to the church’s historical significance and spiritual ambiance, making it an important place of worship for the local community and visitors alike.
