Fort Emmanuel, also known as Fort Manuel, is a ruined fort in Kochi (Cochin), Kerala, India, located along Fort Kochi seashore. It is a Portuguese stronghold and a sign of the Maharaja of Kochi’s strategic connection with the Kingdom of Portugal. It was the first Portuguese fort in Asia, named after King Manuel I of Portugal. The fort was built in 1503 and strengthened in 1538. The Dutch, and later the British, had demolished the fort’s walls and bastions by 1806. The ruins of this once-impressive edifice can still be seen along the shore today.
