Gundert Bungalow is a 19th-century bungalow located at Illikkunnu, in the suburbs of Thalassery, In the Kannur District of Kerala state. Dr. Herman Gundert, a respected German missionary, historian, and lexicographer, lived at Gundert Bungalow and made significant contributions to the Malayalam language. Dr. Gundert spent two decades in the bungalow. One of the first Malayalam dictionaries was written at Gundert Bungalow, as was the first Malayalam newspaper, Paschimodayam.
Gundert Bungalow is located near the Kuyyali River, only 4 kilometers away from the Thalassery town. It was designed in the traditional Kerala architectural style. The roof is massively tiled. All four sides have wide verandahs. The windows and doors are made of wood and are very large. Laterite stones and red clay roof tiles were used by the artisans. All of these materials are readily available in the region. Visitors are drawn to the city for its culture rather than its architecture.
