Guruvayur Sri Krishna Temple, situated in the town of Guruvayur in the Thrissur district of Kerala state, India, is a Hindu temple dedicated to the Hindu god Guruvayurappan (a four-armed version of the Hindu god Vishnu). It is one of the most important places of worship in Kerala for Hindus and is also referred to as Bhuloka Vaikunta (Vishnu’s Holy Abode on Earth).
History and Significance
The temple is managed by Guruvayur Devaswom under the control of the Government of Kerala. The ancient Sree Krishna Temple is known as the Dwaraka of the South. In Kerala and the whole region, it is among the most respected and famous pilgrimage destinations. It is assumed that the central shrine was restored in 1638 C.E. Within the temple, the architectural theme and individual features are exquisite depictions of the place’s history.
Architecture and Features
As per tradition, the shrine faces the East with two towers (Gopurams), one in the east (Kizhakkenada), and one in the west (Padinjarenada). The pillars of light called Deepastambam lie on the front and east sides of the Nalambalam (a square-shaped column). In the temple, there are a variety of light pillars of this kind. Deepastambam is 24 feet in height on the eastern side and has thirteen circular receptacles, giving it an utterly stunning view when illuminated. Dwajasthamba is another popular sight here. It is a flag-staff, about 70 feet long, coated completely in gold.
Inner Sanctum
With two stairs and three rooms inside, the square-shaped Sree Kovil has an inner space known as Garbhagriha. This is where Sree Krishna’s idol is situated. Inside the shrine, one can also find images of Ganapathy, Lord Ayyappa, and Edathedathu Kavil Bhagavathy. The shrine’s healing powers inspire us to visit it in huge numbers. Within the Temple, only Hindus are permitted.
