Idamalayar Dam, a remarkable concrete gravity dam in Kerala, was completed in 1985. It spans the Idamalayar River, a major tributary of the Periyar River, creating a vast reservoir covering 28.3 square kilometers. Located in the Ernakulam district, at Ennakkal between Ayyampuzha and Bhoothathankettu, this dam serves multiple purposes, including hydroelectric power generation, irrigation, and flood control.

Hydroelectric Power and Irrigation Benefits of Idamalayar Dam

The dam supports a 75 MW hydroelectric power station, producing an annual output of 380 GW·h, significantly contributing to the region’s power supply. Standing 102.40 meters tall, Idamalayar Dam features an Ogee-type spillway with four radial gates, each measuring 11.5 x 9.7 meters. The construction of this Very High Dam (VHD) was completed in 1987.

The primary purpose of the dam is to generate hydroelectric power, but it also plays a vital role in providing water for irrigation, industrial use, domestic supply, and salinity control in the lower Periyar region. The Idamalayar Hydro Electric Project, located about 80 kilometers from Kochi, harnesses water from the natural catchment areas, especially during the monsoon season. The project operates with two Francis-type turbines, each generating 37.5 MW, for a total capacity of 75 MW.

The dam’s power is evacuated through 110 kV IMMA and IMAP feeders to substations in Chalakkudy and Kalamassery, boosting the network’s capacity. Additionally, the Idamalayar Irrigation Project aims to irrigate extensive agricultural land in Ernakulam and Thrissur districts. This project benefits areas on both banks of the Chalakudy River and includes a main canal, a low-level canal, and a link canal, targeting an additional ayacut of 14,394 hectares.
