Nestled between Mattancherry Palace and the Paradesi Synagogue, Jew Town is a vibrant area renowned for its narrow streets, colonial buildings, and bustling shops showcasing local art and antiques. The blend of Dutch and Kerala architecture adds to the unique charm, making it a picturesque spot for photographers and a must-visit for antique enthusiasts.

Exploring the Charm of Jew Town in Kochi

The history of Jew Town dates back to 1524 when Jews from Kodungallore were granted refuge by the King of Kochi, who allocated land in Mattancherry. Over the years, this area evolved into a hotspot for antique collectors and history buffs. The large-scale migration of Jews to Israel in the 20th century left many dwellings unoccupied, leading to the emergence of numerous antique shops selling items of Indian, European, Chinese, and Arab origin.

Visitors to Jew Town can explore a wide variety of rare items, including jewelry, crockery, wooden furniture, sculptures, vintage photographs, and embroidered garments. One of the major attractions is a large bronze vessel. These artifacts are fragments of history, offering glimpses into the past and waiting to be discovered by the right individual.

Jew Town’s charm is not just in its shops but also in its rich cultural heritage. The Paradesi Synagogue, built in 1568, is one of the oldest active synagogues in the Commonwealth. It stands as a testament to the area’s vibrant history and diverse community. Visitors can explore the synagogue’s intricate decor, including 19th-century Belgian glass chandeliers, hand-painted tiles from China, and ancient Torah scrolls housed in silver cases.

While Jew Town offers a unique shopping experience, some visitors find the prices steep. Nonetheless, the area is also home to spice markets and quaint cafes where you can take a break and soak in the atmosphere. Renting a bicycle is recommended for exploring Jew Town due to the hot climate and narrow streets, making it easier to navigate and enjoy the surroundings.

Getting to Jew Town Kochi
