Kakkayam Dam is a great spot for hiking, rock climbing, and boating. Boating in the dam offers a unique view of the area, surrounded by waterfalls and dense forests. It’s also ideal for a peaceful picnic with your loved ones. The area is rich in wildlife and you might even spot elephants and bison. As you approach the dam, you’ll be greeted by lush greenery and waterfalls. The Urakkuzhi Waterfalls is a beautiful spot just after the dam, perfect for relaxing and enjoying the natural surroundings.

To reach the dam, you need to trek for around 16 kilometers from the Kakkayam Valley base camp. The nearest town is Kakkayam, which is 13 kilometers away from the dam. The dam can be reached by road by taking the Balusseri to Koorachund route.
The nearest airport is Calicut International Airport, 73 kilometers away, and the nearest railway station is Calicut (Kozhikode) railway station, 60 kilometers away. The best time to visit is from October to March, and the dam is open from 10 AM to 5 PM.
Kakkayam Dam is a part of the Kakkayam Ecotourism by the Kerala Forest and Wildlife Department. The entry covers Kakkayam Dam, Malabar Wildlife Sanctuary, and Urakuzhi Water Falls. The entry fee is INR 20 for adults, INR 10 for children, and INR 60 for foreign nationals.
Presently, KHTC operates 22 daily trips utilizing its two-speed boats. Each boat accommodates up to six individuals, including the driver. The cost for a single trip is INR 750 for 5 people including children, and the boats can undertake a maximum of 50 trips in a day. In addition to the boat rides, KHTC has introduced a bicycle ride experience from the Kakkayam dam site, lasting for approximately 30 minutes.
