Kallar River is an upper tributary of the Vamanapuram River flowing through the Thiruvananthapuram district of Kerala. The river originates in the Chemunjimotta hills on the southern side of the Western Ghats. Kallar River is not only a picturesque spot but also a popular destination for trekking, angling, and bird watching.
One of the main attractions of the Kallar River is the Meenmutty Waterfall, which is about 3 km away from the river bank. The waterfall is a three-tiered cascade that plunges from a height of about 300 meters. The trek to Meenmutty Waterfall is an adventurous one, as you have to cross rocky terrain and dense forest. On the way, you can spot rare birds and butterflies, and enjoy the fresh air and greenery. Another place worth visiting near Kallar River is the Golden Valley, a small stretch of sandy beach along the river located 12 kilometers away from Ponmudi Hills. The Golden Valley also offers a panoramic view of the surrounding hills and forests.
Kallar river can be visited at any time throughout the year, and the ideal time is from October to February to enjoy most of it. If you are planning to visit the Kallar River, you can make use of the modern Tourist Facilitation Centre run by the District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC), Thiruvananthapuram. The center provides information, guidance, and facilities for tourists who want to explore the Kallar River and its surroundings. You can also hire guides from here if you need assistance during your trekking or angling activities.
