Kalloorkad St. Mary’s Basilica

Kalloorkad St. Mary’s Basilica, also known as Champakulam Kalloorkadu St. Mary’s Basilica, or Champakulam Valia Palli, is one of the oldest Christian churches in India. It is located in Champakulam village, which is about 15 kilometers from the city of Alappuzha in Kerala. The church is believed to have been established in AD 427.

Kalloorkad St. Mary’s Basilica is a Catholic Syrian church belonging to the Syro-Malabar Church under the Archeparchy of Changanassery. It is considered the mother church of almost all Catholic Syrian churches in the Alappuzha District. The church has undergone several reconstructions over the years. The basic architectural pattern of the church typifies the shape of Rome’s four main basilicas. The church has a rich history and is known for its cultural and religious significance in Kerala. It is a minor basilica and a popular tourist destination in the region.
