Set amidst the verdant landscapes of northern Kerala, the Kanhangad Swami Nithyananda Ashram stands as a deeply revered spiritual sanctuary, offering more than just a place of worship. Located near the historic Hosdurg Fort, this sacred retreat was founded by Bhagawan Nithyananda in the early 20th century. What makes it truly remarkable are the 43 hand-carved caves, created from a single laterite stone—each one echoing peace, solitude, and devotion. These caves, famous for their unique thermal properties, continue to draw seekers from across the country in search of spiritual quietude.
A Testament to Divine Vision and Sacred Architecture
The ashram’s architectural charm lies in its combination of spiritual simplicity and historical depth. Above the caves stands the Nithyananda Temple, housing a striking Panchaloha idol of Bhagawan Nithyananda in Abhaya Mudra, symbolizing divine protection and peace. Built in 1963, this temple is surrounded by majestic pillars and intricate carvings that reflect Kerala’s rich spiritual heritage.
Just a few kilometers away lies Guruvanam, a peaceful forest retreat where Swami meditated during his youth. The ashram grounds also include a Goshala (cow shelter), Bhojanalaya offering free meals, and an area called the Round Table, where Bhagawan delivered discourses. Staying here—even briefly—offers an opportunity to connect with the rhythm of ashram life, and its timeless teachings of simplicity, service, and surrender.
