Located in the Edava village of the Thiruvananthapuram district in Kerala, the Kappil Shiva Temple is a revered ancient temple devoted to Lord Shiva. The temple is over 2000 years old and boasts remarkable paintings of Lord Shiva and other gods and goddesses around the temple.
History, Location, and Timings
The temple is located in close proximity to Kappil Beach and is just a 15-minute drive from Varkala Cliff. With a history spanning over 2000 years, the temple houses a Shivling and faces west towards the sea. Additionally, the Upa Devatas worshipped here are Sri Krishna Bhagavan, along with Rukmini and Satyabhama, Nandi, and Nagam. Notably, the Kappil Shiva Temple shares its premises with the Kappil Bhagavathy Temple.
Kappil Shiva Temple is situated on the banks of the Edava Nadayara Kayal which merges with the Arabian Sea. The temple offers a panoramic view of the lake, the beach, and the backwaters. The temple is also surrounded by lush greenery and coconut trees, creating a tranquil atmosphere for worship and meditation.
The temple is currently maintained by Devaswom Board. As it is also located near the Kappil Bhagavathy Temple, making it a popular tourist spot during the Onam and other major festivals of Kerala. The temple premises are decorated with flowers, lamps, and rangolis (colorful patterns) during these occasions. The temple also hosts various cultural events and performances by local artists.
Kappil village falls under the Varkala block in the Thiruvananthapuram district of Kerala State and is easily accessible through various means of transport, including railways, roadways, and waterways. The temple is open from 5 AM to 10 AM and 6 PM to 7:30 PM.
