Karinthandan Temple, located on NH 766 in Lakkidi, Kerala, is a site rich in history and legend. Nestled by the roadside near the Lakkidi Viewpoint, the temple is easily accessible and attracts many visitors. The story behind this temple is both fascinating and tragic.
Legend of Karinthandan: A Haunting Tale and Cultural Heritage
It is believed that Karinthandan, an Adivasi, helped the British discover routes through the mountains. Tragically, he was later killed by them. According to local legend, Karinthandan’s spirit haunted the area, causing accidents until a priest bound his spirit into a chain, which now hangs on the “Chain Tree” at the temple.
The temple serves as a memorial to Karinthandan, revered by locals and tourists alike. The “Chain Tree” is a significant feature, symbolizing the binding of Karinthandan’s spirit. Karinthandan was a Paniya tribal chief who guided British engineers through treacherous terrain in the 17th century. Allegedly, the British pushed him off a cliff to take credit for the route, leading to his death. His sacrifice is a poignant part of Wayanad’s cultural heritage, symbolizing resistance against colonial powers.
Efforts to honor Karinthandan include plans for a statue at Churam Pass, though some view it as cultural appropriation. His story is also immortalized in various art forms, including literature, theater, dance, and music. The Malayalam novel “Karinthandan” by Sanal Krishnan delves into his character and motivations, further preserving his legacy. Visitors to the temple often partake in rituals at the Chain Tree to lift the supposed curse, making it a place of cultural and spiritual significance.
