Karumadikuttan is a Buddha statue made of black granite, and it is located in Karumadi village in the Alappuzha district of Kerala. It is both a famous pilgrimage site for Buddhists and a popular tourist attraction. This statue is about 3 feet tall and is believed to date back to the 9th to 14th century.

Karumadikuttan Statue: A Historical Buddhist Relic in Alappuzha

Legend has it that the statue was found abandoned in a nearby stream called Karumadythodu. The statue has become a symbol of Buddhism in Kerala since its discovery. The statue is well-known for its unique seated posture and the missing left hand, which has given rise to many tales and legends. It is considered an important representation of the Buddhist culture that thrived in the region during the 9th and 10th centuries.

Visitors can explore the statue and the surrounding area in 1-2 hours, and no need to pay an entrance fee. The statue is open to visitors every day of the week from 8 AM to 6 PM. The area around the statue has many other interesting places, such as Punnamada Lake and Thumpoly Beach visitors can consider visiting.

One has to travel 15 kilometers from Alappuzha on route NH 47 between Kollam and Alappuzha to reach the Karumadikuttan statue. The statue is situated about 3 kilometers east of Ambalappuzha and can be reached by road easily. The nearest railway stations to Karumadikuttan are Ambalappuzha (4 kilometers away) and Alappuzha (14 kilometers away). The closest airport is Cochin International Airport, which is located about 100 kilometers away from the statue.
