Kavalappara Kottaram (Kavalappara Palace) also known as the thousand-year-old palace, is a historical landmark in Kerala’s Palakkad district. Kavalappara is located in Shoranur Municipality, Palakkad District, and is the hub of Valluvanad, a small village with many historically significant sites.
The Kavalappara family is an Indian Nair aristocracy. They were pledged to the service of the rajas of the area, first of Palghat and then of Cochin, as members of the landed nobility in medieval Kerala. Their holdings extended to places such as Kailiad and Panayur, and they were based at Kavalappara Desam in Karakkat, Valluvanada.
Around 900 years ago, the Mooppil Nair dynasty ruled Kavalappara Kottaram. Kavalappara swaroopam was created during the reign of the last Perumal Rama Varma Kulasekhara Perumal AD 1090 to 1102. During the medieval period, the Kavalappara Nayar family was one of the wealthiest and most noble families in central Kerala.
