Tucked away in the lush greenery of Kerala’s Western Ghats, Kottiyoor Temple in Kannur district stands as a powerful symbol of devotion, nature, and ancient mythology. Revered as Dakshina Kashi (Varanasi of the South), this pilgrimage site in Kannur district is dedicated to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathi. With its deep-rooted significance in Hindu epics, Kottiyoor offers more than spiritual refuge, it provides a profound connection to nature and heritage that few places can match.
Kottiyoor Temple: A Sacred Sanctuary Amidst Nature and Legend
Set on the banks of the Bavali River, Kottiyoor comprises two distinct temples: Ikkare Kottiyoor (Vadakkeshwaram Temple) on the western bank, and Akkare Kottiyoor on the eastern bank. The latter opens only once a year during the revered Kottiyoor Vaisakha Maholsavam, a 27-day festival held typically in May–June. Rooted in the legend of Daksha Yaga, the site marks where Sati Devi immolated herself and Lord Shiva unleashed his grief and wrath. The natural surroundings—dense forests, a sacred grove spanning over 80 acres, and a gently flowing river—create a spiritual ambiance that enhances every devotee’s journey.
The Ammarakal Thara, believed to be the very spot of Sati’s sacrifice, and Thiruvanchira, the sacred waterbody, are among the key ritual sites. The circular layout of Akkare Kottiyoor with 72 small shrines symbolizes the ancient yaga shala and is centered around the Manithara, where offerings are made. Rituals like Neyyattam (ablution with ghee) and Elaneerattam (with tender coconut water) are carried out with great devotion, continuing traditions that date back centuries.
While Ikkare Kottiyoor is accessible year-round and showcases traditional Kerala-style architecture, Akkare Kottiyoor exists as a temporary hermitage and is preserved with utmost sanctity. The temple complex, restored under the guidance of Adi Shankaracharya, maintains its spiritual discipline and rustic charm, emphasizing simplicity, cleanliness, and respect.
