If you’re looking for a beautiful and scenic destination in Munnar, Kerala, then Kundala Dam should be on your list. This breathtaking location is located in the Idukki district, approximately 20 km from Munnar town. Not only is it a stunning location, but it’s also a significant part of the Pallivasal Hydroelectric Project, the first hydroelectric project in Kerala.

Kundala Dam: A Marvel of Engineering

Kundala Dam is a masonry arch dam completed in 1947, and it’s considered to be one of Asia’s first arch dams. The dam stands at a height of 46.93 meters and has a length of 259.38 meters. With five spillways and vertical lift gates, the maximum water level of the dam is 1759.3 meters, and the storage capacity at the full reservoir level is 7.65 million cubic meters.

The Kundala reservoir stores water that’s released through the Palar River to Mattupetty Dam located downstream. From there, the water is released to a canal that leads to a powerhouse. The Pallivasal Hydroelectric Project has three units with a capacity of 4.5 MW each, generating about 22.74 million units of electricity annually.

Aside from its engineering marvel, Kundala Dam is also a popular tourist attraction in Munnar. It’s a place that offers spectacular views of the surrounding hills and valleys. The Kundala Lake, which is formed by the dam, is a serene spot for boating and fishing. The lake is home to a variety of fish, including trout and carp. Additionally, the lake hosts the Neelakurinji flowers, which bloom once in 12 years, covering the hills with a blue carpet.

Plan Your Visit to Kundala Dam

Visitors can access Kundala Dam and the lake every day of the week from 9 AM to 5 PM, without any admission fee. The best season to visit the dam is from October to March when Munnar is most tranquil and the weather is pleasant. Kundala Dam is situated just 25 kilometers away from Munnar and is easily accessible by road. The nearest airport to Munnar is Cochin International Airport, which is approximately 131 kilometers away, while the closest railway station is Aluva, located about 132 kilometers away.

For nature lovers and adventure seekers visiting Munnar, Kundala Dam is a must-visit location. It’s a place where one can enjoy the beauty and tranquility of nature while learning about the history and engineering of the dam and the hydroelectric project. Whether you’re interested in the dam’s history, the beautiful views, or the chance to fish in the Kundala Lake, this location is one that should not be missed.
