Kundala Lake lies about 20 kilometers away from Munnar’s beautiful southern hill town. The lake offers unparalleled natural elegance to tourists as the morning sun rises quickly across the horizon and the water reflects the light in a million different directions.
Kundala Lake and the Spectacular Kundala Dam
This lake leads to the Kundala Dam, another site with spectacular views over the city. It was built in 1946 as part of the Pallivasal Hydroelectric Project. The dam has a height of 28 meters and a length of 365 meters. This lake is renowned for its mesmerizing beauty at an elevation of 1,700 m. You can walk on the dam and enjoy the panoramic view of the lake and the mountains. You’d find yourself surrounded here at this lake by fresh air, trees, high hills, and scented tea gardens.
Kundala Lake is famous for its rare and beautiful Neela Kurunji flowers, which bloom only once in 12 years. The last time they bloomed was in 2022, and the next time will be in 2034. When they bloom, they cover the entire hillside with a carpet of purple-blue flowers, creating a mesmerizing sight.
Boating at Kundala Lake
One of the best ways to experience Kundala Lake is to take a boat ride on its calm waters, it is a must-try activity for anyone visiting Munnar. The breathtaking view of the surrounding hills and a cruise through the serene lake is an unforgettable experience.
The peddle boat that can accommodate two people costs INR 400 for 30 minutes and the coracle boat that can accommodate four people costs INR 650 for 30 minutes. Plan Your Visit to Kundala Lake
Kundala Lake is open for visitors from 9 AM to 5 PM on all days. The best time to visit the lake is from June to September when the area is covered in greenery and flowers are in full bloom. However, the safest and most pleasant time to visit Munnar and Kundala Lake is from October to March, especially if you want to go boating on the lake.
There is no entry fee to Kundala Lake, you only pay INR 20 for the parking and if you opt for a boat ride. The lake is 20 kilometers away from Munnar and it is easily accessible by hiring a taxi from Munnar town. The nearest airport to Munnar is Cochin International Airport (131 km) and the closest railway station is Aluva (132 km).
