Are you in search of a peaceful and picturesque location to take a break from the chaos of city life? Kuthumkal Waterfalls might just be the perfect destination for you. Located in the Idukki district of Kerala, roughly 29 kilometers away from Munnar, this stunning waterfall is one of the lesser-known tourist attractions in the region. But for those who love nature, it offers an idyllic and calming experience.
Exploring Kuthumkal Waterfalls
With its height of around 100 feet, the waterfall is a stunning sight to behold as it cascades down with the sound of water crashing onto the rocks. The lush green surroundings only add to its allure, providing the perfect backdrop to unwind and relax amidst nature. The breathtaking Ponmudi Dam, located about 12 kilometers away from the falls, is another popular attraction nearby, built across the Panniyar River, a tributary of the Periyar River.
It’s an excellent spot to enjoy nature and take some stunning pictures. The waterfall area is not safe for swimming as it can be slippery, but it’s a great place to relax after a long ride. Be careful when climbing on the boulders as it can be lethal sometimes. Many people love to climb and relax on one of the rocks close to the cascading waterfall. The breeze along with the water from the falls will relax you from all the stress.
Plan Your Visit
While the best time to visit Kuthumkal Waterfalls is during the monsoon season, which is from June to September, you can visit during other seasons as well. The waterfall never dries up completely, and the surrounding landscapes remain breathtaking. You can also explore other nearby attractions like Kattadipara View Point, Poopara View Point, Kailsapara Hill Top, and more in Chinnakanal and Munnar regions such as Anayirankal Dam and Eravikulam National Park.
To reach the waterfall, you can either take a bus or hire a taxi from Munnar to Rajakkadu, which is approximately 24 kilometers away. From there, you can opt for a jeep or an auto-rickshaw for the remaining 4 kilometers. Alternatively, if you prefer to drive, you can take your own vehicle, although be ready to navigate a bumpy and narrow road. There is no entry fee for visiting the waterfall and you can park your vehicle on the side of the road and walk for about 200 meters to reach the waterfall.
Kuthumkal Waterfalls is a hidden gem in the Idukki district that deserves more recognition from both tourists and locals. It is the perfect place to spend quality time with your loved ones or simply take in the beauty of nature. If you’re planning a trip to Munnar, don’t forget to include Kuthumkal Waterfalls in your itinerary. Trust us, it will be worth it!
