Established in 1879 by Baron John Von Rosenberg and his son, Baron George Otto Von Rosenberg, the Lockhart Estate was one of the first plantations in Munnar. They initially planted cinchona and coffee before switching to tea. Today, the estate is owned by Harrisons Malayalam Limited, one of South India’s most prominent tea cultivators, and produces about 20 million kilograms of tea per year, famous for its orthodox black tea made with traditional methods.

Located on the slopes of Chokramudi, one of South India’s highest peaks, the Lockhart Tea Museum offers panoramic views of the valley. The museum is located in Devikulam, 9 kilometers from Munnar, and can be reached easily by Munnar-Kulily Road. Traveling a little further from the museum can get you to the Lockhart Gap View and Chinnakanal area which is blessed with must-visit places such as Anayirankal Dam, Elephant Abode Boating Center, Power House Waterfalls, and more.

The museum is open from 9 AM to 5 PM daily except on Mondays, with an entry fee of INR 250 for Indian adults, INR 100 for Indian children, INR 500 for foreign adults, and INR 250 for foreign children. The ticket price includes a guided tour of the factory and a tea-tasting session. Visitors can also purchase premium quality tea from the museum shop or enjoy some delicious snacks at the café.
