A quick insight into Madamakkulam Waterfalls

Exploring the Flora and Fauna of Madammakkulam

The name Madammakkulam comes from a British lady named Madam Robinson who used to visit this spot during the colonial era. ‘Madamma’ means foreign woman and ‘Kulam’ means pond in the local language. This natural wonder is located about 19 kilometers from Peermedu town and 12 kilometers away from Kuttikkanam.

The waterfall is a hidden gem in the lofty peaks of Peermedu and is a wonderful picnic location, frequently visited by tourists for its cool breeze and smaller wildlife. Visitors can enjoy the natural beauty of the Madammakkulam Waterfalls while having a rendezvous with the cascading water, making it a must-visit destination for those who love to explore nature.

The lush forests surrounding the waterfall provide a natural habitat for a diverse range of flora and fauna, including birds, butterflies, squirrels, monkeys, and even elephants. Additionally, the area is abundant with medicinal plants and herbs that are used by local tribes for their healing properties. The air is crisp and infused with a pleasant aroma, while the sound of the cascading water creates a tranquil atmosphere.

Other popular places near Madamakkulam are Urumbikkara Hills, Pappani Waterfalls, Vadakkemala Waterfalls, and Vellapara Waterfalls.

Plan Your Visit

The Madammakkulam Waterfall is situated on a private estate and lacks basic tourist facilities. The journey to the waterfall is quite adventurous and the area is sparsely inhabited. The weather can be unpredictable. It is an ideal location for bike riders who enjoy off-road rides. The road leading to the waterfall is filled with big stones, making it unsuitable for small cars or bikes as they risk hitting the bottom of the vehicle. Visitors are advised to hire a jeep from Kuttikanam town for transportation. Due to the rough road, there are not many tourists, making the location peaceful and clean.

But, since the waterfall never runs dry, it can be visited at any time of the year. Additionally, there is no entry fee for visiting Madammakkulam Waterfalls. You can reach the waterfall by road from Peermedu town, or by trekking through the forest trails.
