Malampuzha Dam Kerala’s largest dam and reservoir, is located near Palakkad in the state of Kerala and was constructed by the then Madras state after independence. It is a combination of a masonry dam with a length of 1,849 meters and an earthen dam with a length of 220 meters, making it the state’s longest dam. It is situated in the scenic hills of the Western Ghats in the background.
Malampuzha Gardens, the only rock-cut gardens in South India, were created by Nek Chand, a renowned artist and recipient of the prestigious Padmashree Award. Broken bangles, tiles, used plastic containers, tins, and other waste materials make up the whole garden.
The massive Malampuzha Yakshi (female vampire) designed in 1969 by Kanayi Kunhiraman, a well-known sculptor from the state, is also located in the gardens. It’s a magnificent work of art that we’re fortunate to still have. Flowering beds, fountains, and rose gardens, as well as an aerial ropeway, make this a spot that completely relaxes the visitors.
Malampuzha has excellent trekking trails that are open to anyone with a passion for the outdoors. The Malampuzha Gardens and the Irrigation Dam are two of the most popular tourist destinations. Apart from being an ideal picnic spot, the area is surrounded by a wealth of fascinating trivia, which adds to its allure.
