Nestled in the vibrant center of Kozhikode city, Kerala, Mananchira Square provides a tranquil retreat from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Known for its lush green lawns, soothing ambiance, and cultural richness, this park is a favorite among locals and visitors alike. At its center lies the historic Mananchira tank, a rectangular freshwater pond built centuries ago, surrounded today by walkways, manicured gardens, traditional architecture, and cultural landmarks. Whether you’re in the mood for a peaceful stroll or a glimpse into Kozhikode’s past, Mananchira Square is a must-visit.
A Historic Legacy Turned Cultural Landmark
Mananchira dates back to the 14th century, when it was built by Zamorin Mana Vikrama, the feudal ruler of Kozhikode. Initially intended as a royal bathing pool, it later served as a drinking water source, even presented as a gift to Sayed Jifri during the time of Tipu Sultan’s rule in Mysore. Covering an area of 3.49 acres, the tank is fed by a natural spring and is now preserved exclusively for potable water.
In its earlier avatar, the surrounding space—Mananchira Maidanam—was a lively playground that hosted numerous football tournaments and religious celebrations like the Mananchira Ayyappan Vilakku. The transformation into Mananchira Square came in 1994 when two nearby roads were closed to create this tranquil public park.
Attractions Around Mananchira Square

An open-air theater and an artificial stream enhance the park’s charm, while a musical fountain and an artificial hill provide a delightful space for family recreation.
Visitors can also find a bust of the celebrated Malayalam writer S. K. Pottekkatt and a traditional-style public library that seamlessly blends with the square’s aesthetic. Adding to its historical value are remnants like Tipu Sultan’s cannons. The square is surrounded by notable landmarks such as Pattala Pally, Mittayi Theruvu (S.M.
