Mananchira Square is one of the best spots you should visit in Calicut city. It is a park situated in the center of Calicut city with a green and beautiful ambiance, consists of an artificial stream, a musical stage, and an open-air theatre. Visitors visit this serene place in order to spend a peaceful evening among the beautiful landscapes of the park, surrounded by trees and plants.
The rectangular-shaped man-made pond (Mananchira) is on 3.49 acres and fed by the natural spring. Around the 14th century, Zamorin Mana Vikrama, the feudal lord of Kozhikode, built Mananchira as a bathing pool. He made this as a drinking water supply as a present for Sayed Jifri at the time of Tippu’s Sultan Mysore emperor.
The park complex surrounding the lake, Mananchira Square, was opened in 1994. Mananchira Square was historically known as Mananchira Maidanam (Playground) and was famed for football. There have been many football competitions here. Also prominent was the Mananchira Maidanam for the religious practice called Mananchira Ayyappan Vilakku. Later, the Mananchira Maidanam was converted and named Mananchira Square by closing two roads in the vicinity.
