Mangalavanam Bird Sanctuary, situated in Kochi, Kerala, spans 2.74 hectares and is known for its ecological significance. Hosting a tidal lake connected to Kochi backwaters, the sanctuary supports diverse mangroves and serves as a vital nesting ground for migratory birds. However, the increasing presence of high-rise buildings around the sanctuary poses threats to bird movements, impacting their orientation, take-offs, landings, and nesting activities.
Discovering the Biodiversity of Mangalavanam Bird Sanctuary
The Mangalavanam Bird Sanctuary boasts a rich variety of flora and fauna, featuring mangrove species like Avicennia officinalis and Rhizophora mucronata. With 72 bird species, six mammal species, two amphibian species, and seven fish species, Mangalavanam is a biodiversity hotspot. Previous studies, such as a 2006 bird survey and butterfly and spider studies, have contributed valuable insights into the sanctuary’s diverse ecosystem.
Despite its small size, Mangalavanam plays a crucial role in Kochi’s environmental balance, earning it the title of the “green lung of Kochi.” Managed by the Assistant Conservator of Forest and Wildlife Warden, the sanctuary faces challenges, particularly due to the encroachment of nearby buildings.
Established in 2004, Mangalavanam Bird Sanctuary, while praised for its ecological importance, receives mixed feedback from visitors. Some appreciate it as a peaceful city break, while others express disappointment in its maintenance, bird sightings, and overall experience. Criticisms include issues like mosquito presence, closed towers, and the need for better upkeep. Despite these challenges, there’s potential for eco-tourism development, with some visitors suggesting improvements for a more fulfilling experience.
Situated in the center of Kochi, Mangalavanam Bird Sanctuary is conveniently reachable. It welcomes visitors every day from 10 AM to 5 PM, with an entry fee of INR 10 per person. Ernakulam Town is the closest railway station, approximately 1.5 kilometers away, while Mangalavanam is 28 kilometers from Cochin International Airport.
