Meenkara Dam, set amidst the peaceful scenery of Palakkad district in Kerala, offers a perfect blend of natural charm and agricultural importance. Constructed across the Meenkara River, a tributary of the Gayatripuzha, which in turn feeds the Bharathapuzha River, this dam is an integral part of the Gayathri Irrigation Project. Begun in 1956 and completed by 1964, the dam plays a crucial role in supporting the agrarian lifestyle of the region. Located near Muthalamada and close to the Kerala-Tamil Nadu border, it benefits large stretches of farmland in Palakkad and Thrissur districts, including Chittoor, Nemmara, and Vadakkancherry.
Meenkara Dam: A Blend of Utility and Scenic Charm
Meenkara Dam is not just about utility—it also charms visitors with its serene environment, surrounded by forested hills and verdant plains. The structure itself measures approximately 964 meters in length and features a 30-meter masonry spillway section, rising to a height of 18.9 meters. With a storage capacity of 11.3 million cubic meters and a catchment area of 90.65 square kilometers, it facilitates irrigation across an ayacut area of 3035 hectares. The canal system includes two main canals and a sluice, delivering water from November to March, especially vital for paddy cultivation.
The area around the dam is ideal for day trips and casual getaways. Visitors are drawn to its peaceful setting, enhanced by the presence of nearby rainforests and the natural backdrop of the Western Ghats. The reservoir lake is known for its scenic beauty, making it a popular spot for picnics, photography, and biking. Families often come here to relax in the small park near the dam, while local communities depend on the lake for fishing and farming, adding a layer of cultural authenticity to the visit.
