Mount Kottathalachi, also called Kottathalachi Mala, is a stunning hilltop destination in the Kannur district of Kerala. Renowned for its panoramic views, Christian pilgrimage significance, and serene trekking trails, this peak stands at approximately 2,500 feet above sea level, offering a perfect blend of natural beauty and spiritual allure.

Mount Kottathalachi: Scenic Beauty and Pilgrimage Site

Mount Kottathalachi is celebrated as the “Malayattoor of Malabar,” featuring a holy cross installed in 1958 by Fr. Mathew Mannuramparambil. The site attracts thousands of pilgrims during its annual celebrations, held on the first Sunday after Easter. A recently added statue of Jesus Christ at the peak further enhances its spiritual appeal. Visitors are treated to breathtaking 360-degree views of the Western Ghats, including nearby hills, valleys, and even glimpses of Karnataka’s landscapes.

Trekking Experience

For adventurers, the trek to Mount Kottathalachi is both challenging and rewarding. Accessible via Pulingome, Prapoyil, and Thirumeni towns, the journey typically involves a 3-kilometer hike through grassy trails and lush forests. The weather on the mountain varies, shifting from sunny and warm to cool and foggy, but the constant refreshing breeze and vibrant natural surroundings make the effort worthwhile.

Accessibility and Facilities

The base of the hill is reachable by road from Thabore village, though the final stretch requires off-road vehicles or a short hike. Facilities at the peak are limited but include a small chapel and basic restrooms. Visitors should bring water, snacks, and sturdy footwear for the trek. Early mornings or late afternoons are the best times to visit, allowing for mesmerizing sunrise or sunset views.

Nearby Attractions

The area surrounding Mount Kottathalachi is rich in natural and cultural attractions, such as Udayagiri, Thirumeni, and Chathamangalam. The region is also known for hill agriculture, with exports like rubber, pepper, and arecanut adding to its economic significance.

Tips for Visitors

  • Use an off-road vehicle or hire local transportation for easier navigation.
  • Carry essentials like water, snacks, and weather-appropriate clothing.
  • Avoid visiting during heavy rains to ensure a safe and enjoyable trek.

Whether you’re seeking spiritual solace, thrilling adventures, or peaceful landscapes, Mount Kottathalachi offers an unforgettable experience amidst the Western Ghats’ pristine beauty.
