Olappamanna Mana, located in the village of Vellinezhi in the Palakkad district of Kerala, is a historical building that belongs to the Olappamanna Nambuthiri family, who were renowned patrons of Kathakali and other arts. This Ettukettu building, built in the Kerala architectural style, sits on the banks of the Kunthipuzha River. Over the years, the Olappamanna family has contributed significantly to various fields such as Kathakali, classical music, literature, and Vedic education.
A 300-Year-Old Cultural Legacy
In the past, Olappamanna Mana served as a cultural university and school of Kathakali, specifically the Kalluvazhi style of Kathakali, which was later transplanted to the Kerala Kalamandalam. A visit to Olappamanna Mana is an enchanting experience that offers an authentic glimpse into the traditional architecture, art, and culture of Kerala. The 300-year-old mansion is open to the public and provides accommodation and food. The Mana is located 20 kilometers away from Ottapalam railway station and 64 kilometers away from Calicut International Airport which is the nearest airport.
Apart from being a significant cultural landmark, Olappamanna is also the family name of Subramanian Namboothirippad, an esteemed Indian poet of Malayalam literature. He is known for his poetry’s social commentary and has authored 20 books.
