Overbury’s Folly

Overbury’s Folly is a charming seaside park with a watchtower, located just under a kilometer from the heart of Thalassery, a bustling town on Kerala’s Malabar Coast in Kannur district. This spot takes its name from E.N. Overbury, a judge who served in Thalassery during the 1870s. In 1879, Overbury started building a picnic area on the cliff, but the project remained unfinished. Because of this, the place came to be known as “Overbury’s Folly,” with “folly” meaning an extravagant or incomplete construction.

Overbury’s Folly: A Scenic Historic Spot by the Sea

Set above the Arabian Sea, Overbury’s Folly offers breathtaking views of the coastline and is a favorite place for both locals and visitors to unwind, especially during sunset. Originally meant to be a resthouse for British officers, the structure displays hints of colonial architectural style with its arches and open design. It stands close to other notable landmarks in Thalassery, like the historic Thalassery Fort and the Sub Collector’s Bungalow.

In recent years, the site has been carefully restored and turned into a tranquil park. Today, it features peaceful gardens, shaded spots to sit, and benches where visitors can relax. A popular open-air coffee shop near the beach adds to the relaxed atmosphere, letting guests enjoy refreshments with a view of the sea. The park is a common hangout for people in the evenings, offering a perfect spot to enjoy the cool breeze, lush greenery, and the calming waves below.

Open daily from 8 AM to 8 PM with a small entry fee of INR 10 per person, Overbury’s Folly is an essential stop for anyone exploring the rich history and natural beauty of Thalassery. It provides a peaceful retreat along with a glimpse into the town’s colonial past, making it a memorable part of the local experience.
