Paithalmala or Pythal Mala is a hill station located near Kudiyanmala, in the Kannur district of Kerala. This is Kannur’s highest geographic mountain, standing at 1372 meters above sea level in Pottenplave village. It is 40 kilometers from Taliparamba and 65 kilometers from Kannur. It is located in the Western Ghats, close to the Kerala-Karnataka border, and close to the Kodagu forests. It has become a popular destination for nature lovers, photographers, hikers, and casual visitors.
The majestic hill station of Pythal Mala or Paithalmala near Kannur offers an exciting 6 km journey, a track filled with rare indigenous plants, waterfalls, and a panoramic view of neighboring Karnataka. Visitors must walk over two kilometers through dense forest to reach the Watchtower at the crest of the hill. Because of the deadly steep valleys, this location is also known as a suicide point.
The best time to visit this hill station is during the monsoon and summer seasons. On the route, trekkers can cool down in the refreshing waters of Ezharakundu Waterfalls. If you are serious about trekking, you can trek for more than 7 kilometers to Kappimala or Palakkayam Thattu.

How to Reach Paithalmala
After parking your vehicle, you have to trek about 2 kilometers to reach the Watchtower at the crest of the hill. Paithalmala is located 60 kilometers away from Kannur city, 40 kilometers from Taliparamba, and 62 kilometers from Payyannur. One can drive to Kudiyanmala or get a KSRTC bus from Kannur to Kudiyanmala. The nearest railway station is Kannur and the closest airport is Kannur international airport which is 44 kilometers away from Paithalmala.
