Nestled in the heart of Palakkad, Kerala, the historic Palakkad Fort, also known as Tipu’s Fort, stands as a testament to a bygone era. Constructed in 1766 A.D. by Sultan Hyder Ali, this fortress boasts impressive entry doors and water-filled moats that add to its architectural allure. Open daily from 8:00 am to 5:30 pm, the fort is under the careful watch of the Archaeological Survey of India.

Palakkad Fort’s Living History and Modern Charms

Stepping into the fort’s grounds, known as Kota Maidanam, visitors encounter a piece of history reconstructed in 1766 A.D. during the reign of Sultan Hyder Ali. Originally ruled by Palakkad Achchan, who sought aid from Hyder Ali against the Zamorin’s invasion, the fort changed hands between Mysore Sultans, British forces, and Zamorin’s troops until the British captured it in 1790.

Today, the fort serves various purposes, with the grounds hosting cricket matches, exhibitions, and public meetings. The “Rappadi” open-air auditorium stands as a preserved piece of history, overseen by the Archaeological Survey of India. The “Vatika” children’s park within the fort offers a delightful garden and outdoor playground equipment, providing a modern touch to the historical setting.

As visitors explore the fort’s interior, they’ll discover the Palakkad Special Sub Jail and the Anjaneya Swamy temple. The Lord Hanuman shrine believed to have protected Tipu and his warriors, stands as a testament to the fort’s cultural and religious significance. The “Vatika-Shilavatika” garden adds a touch of serenity to the fort’s walls, creating a harmonious blend of history and modernity.

Exploring Palakkad Fort: Where History Meets Serenity

Visitors are captivated by the scenic beauty of the fort, although some visitors suggest a need for better maintenance. Steeped in history, the fort’s significance includes its connection to Mughal emperors, watch towers, and an ancient temple within its walls. Beyond its historical importance, Palakkad Fort has earned a reputation as a lover’s spot, attracting couples, but it remains suitable for visitors of all age groups.

While some visitors express concerns about couples using the fort as a romantic getaway, ample parking facilities and the presence of a Hanuman temple inside contribute positively to the overall experience. Opinions may vary on maintenance, but Palakkad Fort remains a popular tourist destination, drawing visitors to explore its rich history and architectural charm.
