Parumala Church, also known as St. Peter’s and St. Paul’s Malankara Orthodox Church or Parumala Pally, is a famous church located in Parumala, Thiruvalla Taluk, in the Pathanamthitta district of Kerala. It holds significant religious and historical importance as the pilgrimage center and mausoleum of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church.

Construction and Significance of Parumala Church

The construction of the old church and an adjoining seminary building was initiated under the leadership of Parumala Thirumeni and completed on January 27, 1895. The church underwent expansions until 1960, and on March 19, 1995, the foundation stone for the new church was laid by His Holiness Baselius Marthoma Mathews II, the Catholicos of the East. The new church, designed by architect Charles Correa, has a capacity of 2,000 people.

Parumala Church is particularly significant because it serves as the tomb church of Saint Geevarghese Mar Gregorios, also known as Parumala Thirumeni. He passed away on November 2, 1902, at the age of 54, and his funeral was conducted at Parumala on November 3, 1902, in the presence of thousands of people and hundreds of priests. The church has become a place of pilgrimage, and there are numerous testimonies to the saintly intercession of Mar Gregorios.

Annual Feast and Cultural Significance of Parumala Church

Parumala Church holds its annual feast on November 2nd, commemorating the death anniversary of Saint Gregorios. This significant event attracts hundreds of thousands of pilgrims from India and beyond. During the feast, pilgrims engage in various religious activities such as attending holy mass, participating in processions, enjoying cultural programs, and engaging in charitable endeavors. The celebration also fosters ecumenical harmony, as individuals from different faiths and denominations come together to partake in the festivities.

Beyond its role as a place of worship, Parumala Church embodies a rich tapestry of history, culture, and spirituality. It stands as a testament to the life and legacy of Saint Gregorios Geevarghese, revered as a saint known for universal love and compassion. Visiting Parumala Church offers a remarkable opportunity to immerse oneself in the vibrant heritage and diverse traditions of Kerala.
